DESCRIPTION OF THE ITEM

EARLY PERICAUD TIME SIGNAL RECEIVER (C1914)

The manufacturer and the model :

G Pericaud was one of the largest french radio manufacturers before 1930. The company starts in 1900 as a maker of electric scientific instruments for demonstration uses and coherer detectors for wireless telegraphy. Later they have made electrolytic detectors and, by 1910, crystal radios to receive time signals from the Eiffel tower. After the war Pericaud was the first in France to manufacture tube radios for civilian uses (see my Pericaud page on my web site). The company was sold to "Compagnie des compteurs" in 1924 and have stopped to make radios in 1930. That model, sometimes named "BCM", sometimes N°1005 in the Pericaud catalogues is one of the first Pericaud crystal sets. It was made from 1913 to 1920 and sold as an Eiffel tower time signal receiver before the begining of broadcasting in France (end of 1921). It is a very simple radio with a Pericaud Caiman type detector and a coil with 1 cursor, unable to receive something more than the Eiffel Tower signal. It is marked Appareils TSF G.Pericaud, constructeur Paris on a brass tag inside the cover of the cabinet and GP on the ebonite panel of the cats whisker. It is also marked A/T/E on the cabinet near the terminals. The number 1005 is printed on the base of the cabinet (not a serial number, it is the name of the radio in the Pericaud catalogue). As most of the french "prehistoric" crystal sets, it is not a very spectacular model but a great objet of desire from the point of view of serious french collectors because it is a Pericaud and also because it is a very early one. As all the radios made before the broadcasting period, it is something rare and prized. Size of the cabinet : 23x11x15 cms (9.2x4.4x6 inchs).

Condition :

The radio is not absolutely mint but in beautiful original condition with no modifications or alterations. I have only cleaned and varnished the brass parts which were dirty when I get it. The coil is in perfect shape, the varnished wood cabinet is in nice original condition with only some minor scratchs  and a crack on the cover (see picture). I have also noticed some very minor scratchs on the ebonite panel of the cats whisker, an hole with nothing inside on the base of the cabinet (see picture, It looks to be nothing more than a mistake of the manufacturer)...on final no serious problems on it. The price I hope for this one is a serious one.

Shipping :

-Packaging : $5

-Postal priority : $45
